Aloha! Welcome to BYU—Hawaii.
We are thrilled you are called and set apart to labor as a service missionary on the BYU—Hawaii Campus.
This is a sacred calling and in many ways BYU—Hawaii is a sacred place. Anciently La'ie was a "place of
refuge, a sanctuary for outcasts and desperate men and women. Later, in 1865, it became a gathering place
for the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii. Today it has become, through
BYU—Hawaii, a magnificent, highly reputable center of learning for LDS students from many nations. These
students will bear the burden for leadership of the Church internationally.
Along with the Polynesian Cultural Center, BYU—Hawaii plays an important role in the training of these
future leaders. As President David O. McKay declared at the ground breaking of the campus in 1955,
"...from this school, will go forth men and women whose influence will be felt for good towards the
establishment of peace internationally."
Church service missionaries play a key role in the fulfillment of BYU—Hawaii's prophetic mission.
Your work, personality, testimony, and sacrifice will bless the lives of these students in significant ways.
Getting to know our students and learning about their cultures may seem a bit remote to you at this time,
but the Lord will bless you in spectacular ways and make you equal to this important calling.
Please review carefully the material in [the Missionary] handbook. It will help you in preparation for your mission.
Please know we will do everything in our power to help you in that preparation. Please call our missionary
coordinator Bill Neal or his assistant at 808-293-3457 if you have any questions.
Again, we are excited about your coming. May the Lord bless you and your family as you assume this important assignment.
Aloha and best wishes,
Steven C. Wheelwright , President
BYU—Hawaii
