You need to understand who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are before you can make effective career decisions. Take our easy-to-use, online assessments: Do What You Are, Eureka True Colors, Eureka Microskills, and Eureka Occ-U-Sort. Both the MBTI and the SDS are available at the campus testing center.

ASSESSMENT

I. PERSONALITY TYPE ASSESSMENTS
Personality Type refers to a system for understanding human behavior. Essentialy it describes the different ways people take in information, make decisions, and react to the world around them.

It is based on the belief that there are sixteen distinctly different personality types and every person has one that accurately describes him or her. People are born with a type and it does not change throughout life. People grow, develop and change as a result of life experiences. But it is behavior that changes, not the basic personality type.

Knowing these things can be help you determine which major, occupations and work situations could be a better fit for you.

Things to Consider:

  1. Personality types are not labels. They are PREFERENCES. Don't let them limit you.
  2. Don't take suggested occupations at face value. Look for trends, patterns, similarities. Then ask, what other types of occupations are involved with those same types of activities?

DO WHAT YOU ARE

Do What You Are will help you better understand yourself, your motivations, your preferences, your strengths, and your potential areas for growth. This personality type tool can help you make the most satisfying choices for your major field of study and your future occupation or career.

MYERS BRIGGS TYPE INDICATION

The MBTI, a tool developed by Drs. Briggs and Myers, helps make Jung's theory of psychological (personality) types understandable and useful in everyday life. It will help you determine how you best interact with the world and where you direct your energy (extravert or introvert); the kind of information you naturally notice and remember (sensors or intuition); whether you make decisions logically and impersonally or by using personal values (thinking or feeling); and your preference for a more structured or more spontaneous way of life (judging or perceiving).

Take the MBTI
To take the MBTI, please go to the BYU Hawaii Career Services Center (CAF 180, adjoins the cafeteria) or Counseling Services (MCK 181) and obtain a client login and password. You may then take an online version of the assessment.

Results will be returned to the center where you obtained your login code. You will receive a customized MBTI Career Report which will be interpreted for you by a qualified MBTI administrator.

II. INTERESTS AND ABILITIES INVENTORIES

THE HOLLAND CODE (RIASEC Model)

The Holland Code identifies six different vocational types: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. Sometimes referred to as the RIASEC model, the theory was developed by vocational psychologist, Dr. John Holland.

Note: Drag your mouse over each vocational type for more specific details.

STRONG INTEREST INVENTORY

Your Strong Interest Inventory (College Edition) report helps you explore the path that is right for you by identifying specific college courses, jobs or internships, and extracurricular activities that will allow you to express your unique interests and personal style.

Step-by-step advice on how to evaluate academic majors that fit your interests-and, for advanced students, tips on how to assess a potential first job or graduate program-provides extra help for college students beginning to prepare for success in the world of work. Note that this assessment measures interests, not skills or abilities.

TRUE COLORS

TRUE COLORS is a simple and yet accurate assessment tool based on psychological / personality type or temperament theory. Participants identify a personal "color spectrum" (Blue, Green, Orange, Gold) that represents key personality types and specific behaviors associated with those types.

Note: Drag your mouse over each of the following to view the associative color spectrum.

SELF-DIRECTED SEARCH (SDS)

The SDS measures a person's personality type using Dr. John Holland's six career clusters: realistic (R), investigative (I), artistic (A), social (S), enterprising (E), and conventional (C). Your test results will be indicated in a three letter summary code, indicating the Holland type you most closely resemble based on your responses. The first letter of the code is the type you most resemble, the second letter is for the next strongest type, and the third letter is for the third strongest type. The types not listed in your three letter code are those types you resemble the least.

Your SDS results are not a measure of your abilities or aptitudes but rather an indication if your personality is suited to the type.

Take the SDS: To take the SDS (Self-Directed Search), pick up a testing center ticket at either the Career Center or the Counseling Center. Take your ticket to the BYU Hawaii Testing Center and ask to take the SDS. Your results will be returned to whichever center you used to get your ticket. Please schedule an appointment with a counselor for SDS results interpretation.

III. ADDITITONAL INVENTORIES

EUREKA MICRO-SKILLS
Identify your skills used in many jobs or career areas and get a list of occupations using those skills. You may choose to do either a questionnaire version or to arrange a 'card sort". Both allow you to select 35 skills (out of 72) that you would find satisfying while working on the job. You will rate these as Very Satisfying, Moderately Satisfying, Somewhat Satisfying, and Discard.

You will receive a list of sorted and rated occupations. Then you can compare your chosen skills to those needed to successfully perform a job.

EUREKA OCC-U-SORT

The OCC-U-SORT instrument helps you think about the job market realistically---your willingness to deal with certain tasks, your education level and salary expectations.
