I. Resume Workshop
Attend a basic resume and cover letter writing workshop. See our Calendar/Event Schedule on YCareers.  To see a list of workshops, login and select the EVENTS tab, then WORKSHOPS.

Scroll the list and find the session you want to attend.  To preregister for a specific session, click on the name of the workshop you selected.  This will direct you to a new page with more complete details on the workshop.  At the lower part of the page, you will see a RSVP button.  Click on it to pre-register for that session..

Description: A well-written cover letter and resume are essential to compete successfully for internships or jobs in today's market. Learn the essentials of effective business documents.

  1. Resume and cover letter writing workshops are offered on-campus at least twice a month. Check MyBYUH.edu in the Career Center "Events" section for dates and times.
  2. Make sure that your attendance, including both your name and your student i.d. number, are recorded by the instructor.

 

II. Create Resume

Description: YCareers is the BYU Hawaii electronic job search network and includes not only a job and internship posting board but also functions as the on-campus recruiting scheduler. Students registering for employer interviews or for workshops and programs do so through the YCareers system. YCareers also houses the online storage system for your CAP documents.

  1. Utilize the Resume Development Worksheet to determine content for resume and letter.
  2. Create the resume using either a basic word processing program OR the Career Services sponsored tool, Optimal Resume at www.byuh.optimalresume.com
  3. Submit resume and cover letter to a Career Advisor for critique/review.
  4. Upload resume and letter into your YCareers account.

 

III. Practice Interview
Attend a Job Interview Skills workshop.  (See YCareers for schedule.) Record a mock or practice interview (using the InterviewStream video format).

Description:

  1. Read the InterviewStream user instructions.
  2. You may use InterviewStream equipment in the Career Center (CAF 180) or if your personal computer has a webcam, you may do the interviews from your own desired location. Treat the interview as though it were an actual job interview. Record the interview and save the file. Email the file to your assigned advisor for review and critique.
  3. Upload your critique/rating sheet in your YCareers account.

At the bottom of the details page, click on the RSVP button to pre-register.

 

IV. Interests and Abilities Inventory
Complete an interests and abilities inventory or assessment.

Description:

  1. In the Assessment section of the Career Services website, take the Microskills and Occ-U-Sort assessment. You may consult with your Career Advisor about other interests and abilities inventories to take.
  2. Take one of the available assessments. Schedule an appointment or attend a group session with a Career Advisor to have the assessment results interpreted. Check MyBYUH. for group session schedules or contact the Career Center, 675-3533, (CAF 180) for individual advisor appointment.

 

V. Meet Career Advisor
Meet with a Career Advisor to establish a career life-work plan.

Description: Establish your career goals. Determine the necessary steps to reach those goals. Explore timelines and requirements for internships and other experiential education opportunities, graduate school applications, and job search, including OPT application process for international students. Create an action plan to achieve the goals selected.

  1. Schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor. (call 675-3533 or drop by the Career Center, CAF 180).
  2. Complete goal sheet with advisor. Obtain timelines and checklists from advisor for programs or opportunities of interest.
  3. Upload the goal sheet into your YCareers account.
